HARVARD DEFEATED, 1 TO 0

University Baseball Team Outplayed by Tufts in Uninteresting Game.

Errors and poor hitting were responsible for the defeat of the University baseball team by Tufts last Saturday afternoon by the score of 1 to 0. The game was uninteresting and loosely played throughout.

The University team was clearly outplayed in all departments of the game, especially in hitting. H. Martin pitched a masterly game for Tufts, striking out 15 men and allowing but two hits, while Ernst was credited with four strike-outs and allowed eight hits. Martin gave one base on balls to three for Ernst. Only five Harvard men reached first base, and two of these on errors and one on a base on balls. Carr got the only two hits for Harvard, and in each case stole second; nobody got to third. Six errors by the University team gave Tufts several chances to score, but the necessary hits were not forthcoming, and Tufts men were left on bases in all but one instance.

Tufts' run came in the sixth inning after E. Martin had reached first on a base on balls. Ernst tried to catch him off the base, and threw wild to McLaughlin, allowing the runner to make the only score of the game. The visitors were dangerous again in the eighth inning when Dustin hit safely to left field and stole second. Qualters was given his base and H. Martin sacrificed, putting men on second and third with only one out. Knight was thrown out at first, Lanigan to McLaughlin; and Ernst struck out Dickinson, retiring the side without a score. In the ninth, Roberts got a hit after two were out, stole second, and reached third on an error by Brown. He was left there when E. Martin flied out.

Harvard came nearest scoring in the sixth. Carr hit to centre field and stole second after one was out. McLaughlin struck out and Carr was tagged at third while attempting to steal. In the next three innings not a Harvard man reached first.
