University Crew.

The Boat Club have succeeded in securing the small float at the boat house for use all through the winter. On Tuesday afternoon the float was put in place in spite of the difficulty occasioned by the low tide. The water is at present extremely unfavorable for rowing, as a long stretch of mud intervenes between the float and the river; but the crews, equipped with rubber boots, struggle bravely through it, and will continue to take daily rows as long as the weather permits.

Yesterday afternoon two sets of candidates for the university crew rowed to the Union boat house and back. The first eight was made up as follows: Bow, Higgins; 2, Staunton, 3, Tyson; 4, Winthrop, 5, Hebard; 6, Longworth; 7, Hammond; stroke, Herrick; coxswain, Farquhar. The second crew were: Bow, Sanford; 2, Cumnock; 3, Perry; 4, Longwerth; 5, Finlay; 6, Tilton; 7, Hutchinson; stroke. Herrick; coxswain, Farquhar.

The candidates for the position of coxswain of the University crew met Tuesday. Among those who will try for the seat are W. J. Farquhar, '91, coxswain of his class crew; J. Amory, '92, and H. F. Gould, '92.

The boat will be put into the tank this morning and will be ready for use as soon as the water is let in. As the supply pipe is small, it may take a day or two to fill the tank. The wooden partitions have been fixed in place by iron rods running entirely across the tank, and all other work of construction has been completed. The barge which will be used is that of the '76 crew, the first ever used at Harvard.

The rumor that a new shell has been ordered from Ruddock is without foundation. Ruddock has written that he will not be able to build an eightoared shell this year.

The university barge is still at South Boston and the crew is rowing in the '90 barge. None of the class crews have yet put in an appearance at the boat house, but the sophomores expect to row on the river soon.
