The performance of the Harvard men’s golf team’s freshman was one of the few bright spots in a tough weekend at the McLaughlin tournament, hosted by St. John’s University. The Crimson finished 12th out of 16 competing teams, with Akron taking the number one spot.

Harvard shot an 884 in three rounds of play, well behind Acron’s final tally of 835.

The Crimson’s leading scorer was freshman Danny Mayer, whose total of 216 ranked him as the 24th-best overall performer in the event.

Mayer’s second-round total of 67 was by far the best single effort for Harvard and was among the best of any competitor in the tournament.

Fellow freshman Greg Shuman posted the team’s second-best score with a total of 220.

Sophomore Michael Shore was third on the team with a score of 222, with senior Thomas Hegge (229) in fourth and freshman Peter Singh (236) in fifth.

The Crimson did see some improvement over the course of the tournament, as the team’s total of 297 in the first round was the worst the team would perform all weekend.

Harvard will return to action next weekend, traveling to Hanover to take on Ivy opponent Dartmouth in the Dartmouth Invitational.
