HUPD Arrests Drug Offenders

Two individuals were arrested for drug offenses in Harvard Square Monday night after a stop by a Harvard University Police officer.

The officer, on routine patrol, entered the cemetery on Garden Street after smelling marijuana.

The subsequent drug bust ended with two individuals in custody, and a third released pending a drug test.

The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) arrested two individuals for possession of marijuana, a Class D narcotic.

"We're looking at four bags of a green leafy substance," HUPD spokesperson Peggy A. McNamara said.

Until a drug test is performed, police cannot state that the substance is marijuana.

A 16-year-old male from South Boston was charged with one count of drug possession Class D (marijuana), with intent to distribute, and one count of possession of a Class E drug (prescription narcotics).

One 16-year-old female, who was charged with one count of drug possession Class D, was released into the custody of her parents.

Two other suspects, a 20 year-old male, and a 17-year-old female were interviewed and released without charges.

An 18-year-old male was released, but might be summoned into court if a state drug test comes back positive for a Class E narcotic (prescription).

"Until we get confirmation from the Massachusetts state drug lab, we believe it is Ritalin," McNamara said.

She also said that the two people taken into custody were able to bail themselves out of jail.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time to be doing business," McNamara said.
