Talk about breaking out of a slump.

Alex Gonzalez, senior co-captain of the men's golf team, had not won a tournament in six years. Not since his days in high school in Juarez, Mexico had he finished atop the leaderboard at any major competition.

That all changed over the weekend at the Ivy League Golf Championship.

Gonzalez shot a three-over-par 73 on Friday afternoon and then duplicated that performance the following day to combine for a tournament-best six-over-par 146 effort during the two-day event and capture the Individual Medal by one stroke over Penn's Christoph Kyle.

Making the feat all the more impressive, Gonzalez had to battle less than ideal weather conditions on both days, particularly on Friday when winds and rain swept over the course, to capture the title.

"It feels pretty good," Gonzalez said of his Ivy-best showing. "It's my first win in a long time. It was a great win to finish off my career with."

Although Harvard finished fifth in the team standings, Gonzalez was determined to make his final collegiate competition his crowning individual achievement on the links.

Aside from securing the Individual Medal, Gonzalez's score also earned him a spot on the All-Ivy team. Last year Gonzalez placed 30th overall at the Ivy Championship.
