Stewart Rusty on Pop Culture

Letters

To the editors:

In the article on the evolving Springfest agenda (News, March 9), Undergraduate Council President Beth Stewart illustrated that she is not a truly representative voice of the student body, or, at very least, that she is not a very attentive observer of popular culture, when she was quoted as calling the movie Dazed and Confused a "much-loved '80s film."

Since the movie was in fact made in the 1990s but takes place in the 1970s, Stewart must have simply done us all a favor by averaging the two decades together to arrive at her "'80s" characterization of the film.

Indeed, this may be the same logic that leads Stewart to believe students would be at all interested in a "joust" or "cookie-eating contest" in lieu of a performance by a live band at Springfest. MATTHEW R. MITCHELL '01   March 10, 1998
