Phelps, German Art Expert, Dies

Julia G. Phelps '37, an expert in German art and a lecturer in the Radcliffe Seminar Program, died October 2 at the age of 72.

Phelps was an active instructor in the program for 32 years and was planning her newest class for next semester, family members said. A memorial service was held in her honor on Saturday at King's Chapel in Boston.

Phelps was a life-long member of the Harvard community. She received her bachelors in philosophy from Radcliffe and her masters and doctorate in fine arts from Harvard.

Phelps was a lecturer on German art at the College. She began teaching in the Radcliffe Seminar Program in 1962.

"[She had a] phenomenal 32 years of teaching, and she never seemed to give the same course over again," said Reginald H. Phelps '30, her husband and honorary associate of Dudley House. "She was always packing in new material."
