Pirating Charges Dropped In Case Against MIT Student

All charges against an MIT student accused of pirating millions of dollars in computer software through an Internet board were dropped last week.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard D. Stearns dropped the charges because the student, David LaMacchia, did not make any money from the scheme. LaMacchia had set up a location on the Internet, a global data communication network, from which other users could take popular software programs like Wordperfect.
