Baseball Goes 0-2 Vs. Yale

While Saturday was a complete washout for the Harvard and Yale baseball teams, yesterday was a total disaster for the Crimson as it was swept by the Bulldogs in a double header at New Haven.

Not only did Harvard (7-13 overall, 3-7 Ivy) lose two games, 10-1 and 4-3, to put itself four games behind the Red Rolfe Division-leading Bulldogs (11-10, 7-3), but it also lost captain Mike Giardi in the first game and starting pitcher junior Scott Davidson in the nightcap. The home-plate umpire ejected Giardi from the first game after a called third strike in the top of the third inning with the score tied at one.

The game went downhill from there, as the Bulldogs drove home two runs in the bottom of the third to go up, 3-1. Yale then put the game away with a seven-run sixth.

Junior Jamie Irving started the first game pitching lefthanded for the Crimson, but was roughed up for five runs in nine and one-third innings.

Harvard managed only two hits (singles by juniors Bryan Brissette and Jamie Crowley) in the game, as Yale pitcher Dan Lock went the distance, striking out 12.

The nightcap was a lot closer, and the Crimson had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but couldn't manage.

Junior Joe Weidenbach led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single, and freshman Pete Albers sacrificed freshman pinch-runner Terry Hurt over to second. The rally stopped there, how ever, as senior Bill Madden flied out to center, and Brissette grounded out to third to end the game.

Yale jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second off of a homer by Dave Prybyla and some bad Harvard fielding (three errors and two unearned runs in the game). Davidson started on the mound for Harvard, but a line drive in the bottom of the fifth by Bulldog Tom Hutchison struck him in his right elbow and knocked him out of the game.

Freshman Frank Hogan pitched one and one-third perfect innings in relief, but Yale's Adam Doherty scattered six hits in seven innings to pick up the complete-game win.

The two teams will square off in a doubleheader today in New Haven in a make-up of Saturday's rain-outs.
