Men's Hockey to Face Brown

RPI Victory Over Colgate Forces Crimson-Bears Semifinal

Sophomore Jeff Brick scored two goals as Rensselaer beat Colgate 5-1 last night to win the teams' ECAC quarterfinal series two games to one.

RPI's victory means that Harvard will play Brown in its semifinal matchup. The Engineers advance to Lake Placid, where they will face Clarkson Friday.

Last night, RPI dominated the game against Colgate, building a 5-0 lead before Chris Deprofio scored at 18:39 of the third period to break the shutout. The Engineers outshot the Red Raiders 28-21.

Sophomore Kelly Askew, junior Brad Layzell and rookie Bryan Richardson also scored for RPI.

When the Crimson faces off against the Bears in Lake Placid, it'll be a meeting of two squads with a season's worth of frustration just waiting to be released.

"There's definitely some animosity between the two teams," sophomore Ben Coughlin said. "We're looking forward to the physical game."

The two games between the teams this year were close, and Harvard prevailed both times, beginning its season with a 3-2 win in Providence, R.I., then completing its sweep of the Bears with a 4-2 win at Bright.

Brown finished the regular season with a 14-10-2 record overall, 13-7-2 ECAC, while Harvard ended up 19-4-3 overall, 16-3-3 ECAC. The Bears entered the tournament seed fourth, and there have been no upsets this yea as the top four teams have advanced to the semifinals.

Some players said it really did not matter who the Crimson would have to play in Lake Placid.

"This weekend saw the best hockey we've played in the past four weeks," junior Derek Maguire said. "It doesn't matter who we play. We have to concentrate on our game."

But others said they were happy to hear that the Crimson would have to play the Bears.

"I like playing Brown," junior Sean McCann said. "They're a feisty team, and they felt they should have beaten us this season. It'll be a good game."
