1969:

Following student antimilitary protests, the Faculty votes to end Harvard's ROTC program.

mid-1970s:

The University revives program in current form, with Harvard cadets receiving instruction through MIT.

Spring, 1990:

Faculty Council issues an ultimatium, promising to sever all ties unless the military admits gays and lesbians.

Spring, 1992:

News President Neil L. Rudenstine and Dean of the Faculty Jeremy R. Knowles say the ultimatim is "not binding" and convene a new committee.

Fall, 1992:

The committee issues its compromise proposal; Bill Clinton, who has promised to end the ban on gays in the military, is elected president.
