Calling out "Help the hunger in Somalia," members of the Harvard African Students Association tabled in front of Widener Library yesterday to raise money for that war-torn nation.

According to Una Okonkwo `94, co-president of the association, members were working on behalf of Oxfam America, a non-profit relief organization.

Koranteng Ofusu-Amaah `95, an association member, said that response was "largely sympathetic, but everyone is busy."

Okonkwo said the group raised $500 yesterday, in addition to handing out literature about Oxfam.

"This is our largest fundraising attempt to assist famine relief in recent years," she said. "We want to people to know that famine is one of the biggest problems in the world, but can be alleviated."

The worldwide non-profit agency "funds self-help development and disaster relief projects in Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean," according to its literature.

Oxfam America has contacted student groups at other colleges about raising money for the cause, Okonkwo said.

The association will be continue their efforts today in front of Widener from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
