Chase Nets Suspect

Police last night arrested a man after an eyewitness said he had vandalized a car and a streetlight control box at the corner of DeWolfe St. and Memorial Drive.

According to police radio reports, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a Leverett House security guard contacted Harvard police, saying that a student had reported several people were destroying property outside the house.

Security guards and University police chased three suspects and apprehended them on Linden St., opposite Claverly Hall. Another suspect reportedly fled down Harvard St. He was also stopped.

All four were brought to the corner of Plympton and Mt. Auburn Sts., where they were questioned by Harvard and Cambridge police.

An eyewitness identified one of the four as having been involved in the vandalism, and the other three were released.

The man who was arrested is "one of the Cambridge punk rockers, known to our department" said Harvard Police Sgt. Peter A. O'Hare. He will be charged with "destruction of personal property and Cambridge traffic lights," O'Hare said.

At least six police cars and 12 officers responded to assist in the investigation. Harvard, Cambridge and Metropolitan District Commission officers were present.

At the site of the incident, a BMW windshield was shattered, and wiring was hanging out of a streetlight power box.
