Harvard Golfers Drop Opening Match

The Harvard golf team lost its season opening-dual match to Williams College Friday in Williamstown. The Crimson finished the course with 425 strokes, while Williams had 413, at picturesque Taconic Golf Club.

The annual three-team tournament was reduced to two when a scheduling factor prohibited Holy Cross from participating.

Leading the Williams charge was Tim Frechette, who shot a 74 on a par 71 course.

"He was definitely the difference," said Harvard Captain Terry Murray.

Harvard's low man was senior Murray Gunty, who shot an 83. The five best scores taken from the seven players participating were included in the final tabulation.

Despite the defeat, Murray is optimistic about this year's squad. He cited the encouraging play of three freshmen on the tough Taconic course, reputed to be one of the most challenging in the New England area.

Harvard next competes in the ECAC tournament next weekend in Brewster, Ma.
