The Harvard ski teams each came down a notch from their outstanding performances last week at the MIT Carnival Woodstock and Pico, Vt.

The men's team, coming off it first carnival win in over a quarter century, scored 255 points, 10 less than the winning Johnson St. squad.

The women's team came in fourth after notching a third place finish week ago.

Both squads are varsity teams, not club sports, as The Crimson reported last week.

The men's nordic team dominated its competition, scoring third (Dan Carey), seventh (Bit! Kealey) and 11th (John Seybold) place finished in the 15 K individual race and coming from behind in the final leg to win the relay.

The women's nordic team was even more successful than the men's squad, at least in the individual event, earning a first (Manya Deehr), third (Lucy Macmillan) and eighth (Joy Clendenning).

Men's Fencing

The Harvard men's fencing team performance impeccably this past week, skewering North Carolina Cornell and Duke.

The lenders ducled UNC to a deadlock going into the final bout of the competition, and in that decisive matchup. Crimson Captain left Levy scored the the last touch of the meet, giving Harvard the narrowest of victories, 14-13.

"I didn't think it would be that close, but we definitely deserved the win," Levy said.

The fencers dominated both their subsequent meets, defeating Cornell 18-9. and Duke 19-8.

Women's Fencing

The Harvard women's fencing team dropped three tough matches against well-drilled team from UNC, Cornell, and Duke this past week.

"We are still getting into our competitive form because we had no formal practices during reading period," Captain Lori McLaugalin said. "No other team has a layoff as long as ours."

The Crimson lost to UNC and Duke by the same score of 12-4 and to Cornell. 11-5.
