NEW YORK--All-time base stealing king Lou Brock and relief specialist Hoyt Wilhelm were voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last night by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Brock, only the 15th player ever selected on his first year of eligibility, holds the major league career stolen base record with 938. He is also the all-time National League leader with 118 thefts in a season.
Wilhelm, the man who made relief pitching an art, amassed a 143-122 record in 21 years on the mound. The knuckleballing hurler had a stellar 2.52 career FRA.
Slick-fielding second baseman Nellie Fox missed induction by the smallest margin in the history of Hall of Fame voting. Thirty eight other former players on the ballot also fell short of being named.
