GOTEBORG, Sweden--Henrik Sundstrom stunned John McEnroe in three straight but tough sets yesterday, giving Sweden a 2-0 lead over the United States after the first two singles matches in the Davis Cup tennis final.

Sundstrom outfought the world's number-one player, 13-11, 6-4, 6-3, in their first-ever meeting. It was only the third loss this year for McEnroe, who came into this event with a 75-2 record in Grand Prix events.

Earlier, Sweden's No. 1 player. Mats Wilander, defeated Jimmy Connors, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. The United States, winner of the Davis Cup a record 28 times and never a loser in five previous Cup matches with Sweden, now must win today's doubles match to stay alive in the best-of-five series.

McEnroe and Peter Fleming will play Anders Jarryd and Stefan Edberg in the doubles. The American doubles team is 14-0 in Davis Cup play, but was beaten by the Swedes in their only previous match, a semifinal in the U.S. Open last September.
