Netwomen Romp at States

Freshmen Sweep Singles Matches

The Crimson has not yet nailed down the top spot in Massachusetts women's tennis, but the netwomen made a strong case for their claim to the honor, winning the State Championships played over the weekend at Wellesley.

The netwomen won every match they played for a total of 39 points in the tournament. Far behind the Crimson, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst edged past Boston College into second place, 15-14. It was, said team captain Maria Pe, "a very easy weekend."

Harvard was unable to gain revenge against Boston University, which last week pounded a Crimson squad decimated by injuries, 8-1, as the Terriers did not participate in the tournament. The teams will meet again at the New England Championships October 23-25.

Neophyte

Freshman Elizabeth Evans filled in well for Tiina Bougas in the number one singles position. Coach Don Usher rested Bougas, confident that the squad could win handily without her. Evans played her second match of the week against Barbara Mills of UMass, and repeated the straight-set win of last Tuesday's dual match at Amherst, this time by a 6-1, 7-6 count.

Yardling Tracy Kunlchika took the other singles title for the Crimson with a 6-1, 6-1 win over her Smith College rival.

Only two Harvard players had less-than-perfect records. Deanne Loonin and Debbie Kaufman lost to teammates Erica Schulman and Pe, 6-4, 6-2, as the Crimson took first and second in the doubles division.

When the team visits Amherst for the New Englands, the going will get tougner. Harvard has been runner-up of the tournament for the past two years, falling by slim margins to Yale last year and Dartmouth the year before.

The Blue and the Green look to be Harvard's chief rivals once more. Usher expects upsets against the four Ivy teams--Brown will also be playing--to be the decisive factor in team scoring at the tournament.

Harvard will continue its dual match competition this week when it takes its 3-1 record to Chestnut Hill Thursday against B.C.
