Pipes, Darman Posts Confirmed

Official transition sources confirmed yesterday that Richard E. Pipes, Baird Professor of History, will be named to the National Security Council, advising the new administration on Soviet and East European affairs.

Aides to national security adviser-designate Richard V. Allen said an official announcement is expected shortly, but added that details and the title of the post are still under discussion. Pipes, 57, considered a hardliner on Soviet issues, was in Washington yesterday meeting with Reagan aides.

Confirming an earlier report, Reagan aides yesterday officially announced the appointment of Richard G. Darman '64, lecturer in Public Policy and Management, as deputy assistant to Reagan. Darman will serve as White House staff secretary and deputy to chief-of-staff-designate James A. Baker III.
