A sore throat, a hot day, and a fast pace turned women's cross country star Darlene Beckford's trip to Florida Saturday into something less than a vacation.

She strode to a 90th place finish in the National Division One Championship at Florida State College, with a time of 18:10.

For the first mile and a half, Beckford, who needed penicillin yesterday because of an inflamed throat, kept up with the leaders, boasting her fastest split time of the season at 5:05. Up until about two and a quarter miles into the race, Beckford sped along in the top 20. It was all downhill from there, as the fast start crept up on her and she began to fade.
