NEW YORK--Negotiations to end the 52-day old newspaper strike were derailed for six hours Friday over reports that a secret deal was in the works, but the unions later declared their solidarity and said talks would resume on Saturday.
William J. Kennedy, president of Printing Pressmen's Union No. 2, walked out of the talks about 11 a.m., saying he was suspending negotiations "until we get to the bottom of the story."
But by 5 p.m. Kennedy said he was satisfied that there was no secret deal in the works that his union would be forced to accept, and he said talks with The New York Times and The New York Daily News would resume Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
