King Benefits From Anti-Dukakis Vote; Results Don't Reflect Right-Wing Trend

Connolly Beats Pines

State Rep. Michael Connally narrowly defeated Lois Pines in a neck-and-neck race for Massachusetts Secretary of State, thus ending Pines' hopes to become the first woman to occupy this position.

With 98 per cent of the ballots tallied. Connollycaptured 189,012 votes--26 per cent--while Pines received 185,310--25 per cent.

Despite a slow start, Peabody Mayor Nicholas Mavroules soundly defeated State Rep. Jim Smith in the 6th Congressional district, obtaining 44 per cent of the vote. Smith received 35 per cent and Essex County Commissioner John L. McKean '71 trailed with 21 per cent. Late returns gave Mavroules the lead.

The incumbent Middlesex County District Attorney John Droney retained his office, holding a slim lead over Cambridge attorney Scott A. Harshbarger '64.
