Truck to Move Prince House Behind Union Dorms June 12

A flatbed truck will move the Morton Prince House June 12 from its present location on Divinity Ave. to a site behind the Union dorms, Richard G. Leahy, associate dean of the Faculty for resources and planning, said yesterday.

Delays in obtaining permits from the city of Cambridge for tree-trimming, removing parking meters and taking other measures necessary to widen the Quincy St. path the truck will take postponed the move, earlier scheduled for the beginning of May, Leahy said.

Bulldozing of the Hurlbut parking lot and pouring of the conrete foundations for the house will continue through next week.

Builders will move the 127-year-old house in two sections, Leahy said. The house was moved once before in 1930 from its former location across the street where the Yenching Institute is now located.

The University had planned to demolish the house, but found it more economical and convenient to move it instead, Leahy added.

The delay in moving Prince House has not postponed the construction of a biochemistry lab on Divinity Ave., since the planning of the new building is also behind schedule, he said.

Leahy estimated the house will be ready for occupation a month after the move. The building will house the Freshman Dean's Office next year.

The General Education Office was formerly located in Prince House.
