Radcliffe lacrosse coach Debi Field is happy today. Following a dismal 5-1 drumming at the hands of Penn--a team the 'Cliffe beat last spring--the laxwomen traveled to Bowdoin yesterday and came away with convincing victories in both the varsity (8-1) and J.V. (3-1) games.

Freshman Wendy Sonnabend opened the Crimson attack early in the first half of the varsity contest, taking a pass from Ellen Seidler and drilling home a shot from the right side.

Fellow frosh Ann Velie soon added another tally by taking a loose ball at midfield and racing to the goal.

The rest of the first half fireworks emnated from the sticks of sophomores Wistie Oppenlander and Sarah Mleczko, each collecting a single goal.

The Polar Bears took advantage of a fast break, extra-man situation late in the half to garner their lone score.

Radeliffe did not relent in the second period, pushing home four more goals in the final stanza.

Velie opened and closed the second period scoring. Oppenlander assisted on her second tally of the day, and the prolific freshman went in unassisted late in the game to complete her hat trick.

In between the frosh's exploits. Steffi Baum and Mleczko clicked on what Field described as "a beautiful give-and-go." Seidler's goal a little later upped the margin to 7-1 before Velie capped the scoring.

Coming Together

Field dispensed laurels liberally after the game, to the team in general as well as to individuals. She expressed special satisfaction with the solid, balanced nature of the squad's play. "It was the first time the team came together both offensively and defensively." Field beamed.

Individual plaudits went to Velie. In the words of Field, "She just played a superb game. She had three goals and she played a beautiful game on defense as well."

And in J.V...

In the junior varsity game freshman Ann Thompson scored twice in the first half and Betsy McIntyre added a third tally late in the second half.

The J.V.'s performance was especially pleasing for Field, who pointed out the importance of having "a strong, viable J.V. team" to keep the varsity on its toes during practices.

And with a tough game coming up against Princeton on Saturday, the laxwomen can use all the help they can get.
