Harvard Leads GBC Field Events

Running Events Will Kick Off Tomorrow

At the end of Round One it was the good guys by four. Last night a spirited Crimson field squad jumped, vaulted and hurled its way to a slender 40-36 lead over its crosstown nemesis, Northeastern, in the Greater Boston Championships as BC scored 10, BU followed with 5, MIT with 4, and Tufts managed to eke out a single point. Brandeis merely showed up.

The Harvard attack was spearheaded by three first place finishes. In the high jump, Dan Sullivan claimed the top slot for the Crimson with a leap of 6 ft., 8 in., a feat the spectators at the Indoor Track and Tennis Building have grown used to seeing this season. Harvard's Mark Young took fourth place honors in this event.

Meanwhile, in the pole vault, Geoff Stiles of Harvard duelled with Northeastern's Paul Grant all the way up to the 15 ft., 6 in. range, until Grant dropped off and Stiles went on to win the event with a mark of 16 ft., 0 in., in a repetition of the scenario that took place in the meet with Northeastern on January 14.

The team of Ed Ajootian and Tom Lenz grabbed first and third place, respectively, in the 35-lb. weight event. Ajootian's throw pierced the 60 ft., 3/4 in. mark.

Some of the meet's toughest competiton came in the long and triple jumps, where a stellar Crimson effort managed to neutralize two of Northeastern's strongest field events. Ron Chambers, the Huskie powerhouse who two weeks ago in the Northeastern meet swept three events (taking first place in both jumps and the 60-yd. dash), was the winner in both events. Teammates Ricky Thompson and John Caffrey followed Chambers's meet record mark of 24 ft., 4 3/4 in. in the long jump with second and fifth place finishes. In the triple jump, Huskie jumper Carl Brown followed Chambers's lead with a fourth-place finish.

But Harvard was never far behind. Crimson jumper Hasan Kayali, coming off an injury sustained in the Northeastern meet, took a third place in the long jump and a second place in the triple, bagging the latter with a dramatic come-from-behind performance in the final round. Sola Mahoney landed fourth in the long jump and Bruce Brooks took third in the triple to add more points to the Harvard column.

The running events will cap off the GBC competition today, beginning at 1 p.m.
