Fire in Central Square Area Injures Two, Closes Mass Ave

A two-alarm fire in a furniture store yesterday closed Mass Ave to traffic near Central Square for almost four hours.

Cornelius O'Brien, a Cambridge Fire Department official, said yesterday falling debris injured two firemen inside the building. No one else was hurt.

Double-Check

The fire department will make a routine search of the building, although O'Brien said he believes no one was in the building when the fire broke out.

The firemen encountered heavy smoke and hot air explosions while fighting the fire, which broke out on the store's third and fourth floors, O'Brien said.

The Cambridge Police closed that section of Mass Ave shortly after the alarm went out at 10:30 a.m., and reopened it when the fire was brought under control at 2:30 p.m.
