Team Captains Chosen

Brown, Sanacore Elected

Harvard football's 106th captain will be Mike Brown, a reserve offensive guard, elected at the annual team meeting yesterday at the Varsity Club. Also, John Sanacore, a three-year starter on the soccer team, was named captain of next year's soccer team by his teammates.

Brown's selection proved a surprise, as he saw only limited action this year. But Coach Joe Restic and 1978 captain Steve Potysman agreed that the team had made the best possible choice.

"Every year, our people reach in there and tap the man who deserves it most and, in the end, who best handles the job," Restic said yesterday. "Mike is one of the hardest workers on the team. He works with total dedication and he has an unselfish interest in his teammates," he added.

Potysman said, "Despite the fact that Mike hasn't played that much his selection shows how much he means to the team. I'm sure he'll be a great captain."

Brown, a Danvers, Mass. native, captained the football team at St. John's Prep before he came to Harvard. "I'm really looking forward to next season. I think it will be a different type of leadership than we had under Steve--a little more intense. I just hope I can do as good a job as he did," the Kirkland House resident said yesterday.

Sanacore, whose election came as no surprise, drew similarly enthusiastic endorsements from soccer coach George Ford and 1978 captain Jim Langton.

"It's a fantastic selection. The team couldn't have made a better choice. He's a driver. The boys will really rally round him," Ford said yesterday.

Langton called his successor "a leader and a winner and I think the guys recognized that and that's why they picked him."

Unlike Brown, Sanacore has been a field leader for the past three years. A Uniondale, N.Y. native, Sanacore has practiced with the New York Cosmos and he hopes to play professional soccer some day.

"Being captain is a big honor for me, especially after Jimmy. I just hope I can fill Jimmy's shoes," Sanacore said yesterday.

Potysman led the 1978 gridders to a 4-4-1 record (2-4-1 Ivy) and under Jim Langton, the booters compiled a 4-9-1 mark (3-4 Ivy).
