1100 Yale Workers Strike for Wages And Job Security

Yale University's 1100 maintenance men, custodians and dining hall workers and its 300 student employees went on strike for higher wages and increased job security at 6 a.m. yesterday. They have been working without a contract since mid-July, a Yale police spokesman said.

The university's dining halls are closed but all other facilities are remaining open, the spokesman said. Each of the 3000 resident undergraduates will have to provide their own meals for the duration of the strike. Yale is giving them a daily $5.65 rebate.

Several New Haven store and restaurant owners said yesterday they expect to triple sales while the strike lasts.
