Unidentified persons walked away from Quincy House between 1:45 and 2:30 Wednesday afternoon with $2500 worth of cameras and camera equipment, Harvard police officials said yesterday.

Richard W. Smith, head of the Harvard Police Criminal Investigation Division, said the thieves entered the unlocked door of Quincy resident James W. Reinig '76, and stuffed his cameras and equipment in a half-filled laundry bag. Reinig's roomates's cameras were also stolen.

Smith said there have been no clues, but he said the thieves may have been posing as freshmen touring the building.

"The uncanny thing is the fact that they didn't touch anything else," Reinig said. "It was as if someone knew that they were there."

Reinig discovered the theft when he came home and found his room slightly disarrayed, Smith said.

A similar crime occurred in Quincy House after Christmass recess, when camera equipment worth $300 was stolen from a room down the hall from Reinig's, he said.
