Crime at Harvard decreased significantly from last year during the 14 weeks between July 1 and October 9, the latest period for which data is available. There were large drops in the amount of assaults, vandalism, breaking and entering, and bicycle and auto theft.

The only area where a sizable increase occurred was trespassing. Robert G. Mudge, coordinator of records and communications for the Harvard University Police Department, yesterday attributed this to a new training program teaching police officers how to effect trespassing arrests.

The police department keeps data on the location of different crimes that occur on campus, and can get a computerized map of areas where incidents take place.

"Areas of very little problem are the Yard generally, Radcliffe Quad, the Union Dorms, and the Law and Business Schools. Our main concern is the river area," Mudge said.
