Cox Appointed

Gov. Michael S. Dukakis announced Tuesday the appointment of Archibald Cox '34, Williston Professor of Law, to head an ad-hoc state committee on judical reform.

Cox said yesterday the committee would formulate recommendations for the legislature and the courts with respect to reforms in court organization, administration, and procedures.

In a telephone interview, Cox called the problem of congestion in Massachusetts courts "desperate." He said that the number of criminal cases introduced in Superior Court increased five-fold between 1958 and 1971.

Also serving on the 20-person committee will be State Attorney General Francis X. Bellotti, state Sen. John J. Conte, and state Rep. Michael F. Flaherty.

Cox said he does not expect the committee's work to interfere with his duties at Harvard.
