Crimson Harriers Defeat Cadets, 83.5-70.5; Hooks Scores Triple Win in Weekend Meet

The Harvard track team defeated Army, 83.5-70.5, in the last dual meet of the year Saturday.

Todd Hooks came up with three strong performances for the Crimson in the 100, 220 and 440 relay. He captured a first in the 100 in 9.9 seconds and a first in the 220 in 21.6 seconds. Hooks also ran the anchor leg of the winning Harvard 440 relay team of Mark Greenberg, Mark McClain, Mike Horton, and Hooks which covered the distance in 42.5 seconds.

Embree Wins

In a stellar effort, Kevin McCafferty tossed the shot 52 ft. 8 in. to win the event. Mel Embree continued in his by now predictable ways by winning the high jump with a leap of 6 ft. 10 in.

Blayne Heckel was a double winner for Harvard with his long jump of 21 ft. 11.5 in, and his pole vaulting efforts of 13 ft. 6 in. Steve Niemi took the hammer throw with a toss of 187 ft. 3 in. He also won the discus. Ahmed Kayali won the triple jump for the Crimson.

Aside from Hooks, Sam Butler and Bill Okerman were the bright spots in the track events of the meet. Butler proved again that he was best at the 440 hurdles as he won in 53.7 and Okerman won the 880 in 1:56.
