Lee, Carbo Power Sox Past Yanks, Catfish, 5-3

The Red Sox continued their winning ways in New York yesterday afternoon as they blasted Catfish Hunter and the Yankees, 5-3. Bill Lee survived a shaky start and went on to pitch a complete game in recording his first win of the year.

Trailing 3-0 after three innings, the Red Sox exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth. The crucial hit was a two-run single by Dwight Evans to put the Sox on top, 4-3. They added an insurance marker in the eighth on a double by Bernie Carbo, one of his three hits, and a single by Rick Burleson.

After giving up one run in each of the first three innings, Lee settled down over the final six and shut out the Yankees on just one hit. The teams concluded their brief series today with an afternoon contest.
