TELEVISION

SATURDAY

The Godfather [1972]. NBC would have us believe there is nothing else worth seeing this week when compared to the Mario Puzo/Marlon Brando blockbuster, so we'll play it their way. Actually, this isn't bad movie. The critics said it was one of the rare films that mix mass appeal with artistic merit, and that is probably true. As you watch it, you should be mildly offended that NBC paid Paramount $10 million to show it one time, and that NBC in turn charged advertisers about $200,000 for one minute of air time. Fuck 'em by turning off the set during the ads. Ch. 4, 9 p.m. Color, 2 hours. (Conclusion Monday at 9 p.m.)
