Freshman Cagers Whip Huskies, 68-52

Harvard's undefeated freshman basketball team coasted to its eighth victory of the year Saturday night, a 68-52 whipping of the freshman cagers of Northeastern.

The final margin of 16 points was as close to the Crimson as the Northeastern squad managed to get for the final three quarters of the game, as Harvard spurted to an early 29-8 lead, and then played the Huskies virtually basket-for-basket the rest of the way.

Balanced scoring was the keynote of the Crimson victory, as the big lead gave Jarvis a chance to empty the bench and give everyone an equal opportunity to play. Jon Honick led all Crimson scorers with ten points, followed by Dave Rogers, Brian Banks, and Joe Leondis, each with nine.

Banks, in the short time he played, was once again the dominating figure on the court, picking off 21 rebounds and handing out three assists.

Northeastern was hampered by poor shooting, hitting on only 17 of 65--or 26 per cent--of its attempts from the field. Harvard clicked on 44 per cent of its shots, and outrebounded the Huskies by a substantial 52-37 margin.

"It was quite obvious, after the first ten minutes of the game, that they were no match for us," Jarvis said. The coach was high in his praise for the team's defense, which held the Huskies to only three baskets through the first 12 minutes of the contest.

"Though we didn't score much, we played excellent defense throughout the game," he added.

Jarvis also credited his squad with having survived a tough schedule, in which they played only one game and had only three practice sessions in over a month.

The Crimson played a methodical, if not a somewhat dull brand of basketball, which Jarvis said was caused by a "let-down" after Thursday night's rough game against a formerly undefeated Tufts freshman squad.

According to Jarvis, the game showed, "we have pretty good depth on the team," as all twelve players contributed to the win.
