Burton S. Dreben '49, professor of Philosophy, is the new dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Dreben, who will take office July 1, replaces acting dean Edward T. Wilcox.

Wilcox served as acting dean for the last year following the resignation of R. Victor Jones last September.

Dreben, who acts as the Faculty's parliamentarian, will also assume the post of associate dean of the Faculty for Graduate Education. That post will undoubtedly entail direct contact with the graduate students on the issue of financing graduate education.

That issue resulted in a graduate student work stoppage two years ago, and another short work stoppage this year. This year's strike faded after four days from lack of undergraduate support.

Wilcox, in contrast to his predecessor Jones, handled the graduate aid question without a major blowup. It had been widely speculated that Wilcox, the head of General Education, would be tapped for the permanent job.
