Enrollment Grows In Math Ar Class

Eighty-five students enrolled yesterday in Math Ar, a course designed to prepare students for Math 1 and basic science courses.

The course was created in the fall of 1971 by Deborah Hughes Hallett, a graduate student in Math and an assistant tutor at Quincy House.

"It wasn't there and it was needed, " Hallett said yesterday. Math Ar aims to provide a reasonable preparation for Math 1, she added.

The course is given for credit and taught in small sections of about ten students. There are two types of sections, depending upon the student's preparation.

The response to the course at yesterday's sectioning meeting was excellent, Hallett said.

The course, which meets three hours per week, is intended to make students enjoy math, rather than "memorize an endless collection of formulae," she added.
