The Department of Buildings and Grounds is beginning today a two-week program of installing peep holes in all of the Houses and freshman dormitories.

William Murphy, director of Buildings and Grounds, said yesterday that almost every door in the University that leads from a common area or hall to a residence room will have a peep hole installed by the end of next week.

The Caretaking Department posted signs last week explaining that workers will enter students' rooms to install the peep-holes beginning at 8 a.m.

Murphy said that the Faculty of Arts and Sciences filed the work order for the peep-holes with Buildings and Grounds. The Faculty budgeted $12,000 from the House and Dormitories Account to meet the expense of installing peep holes on 3000 doors, he said.

Mass Production

The workmen will save time by installing the peep holes along an entire hall or entryway at once, Murphy said. He added that Buildings and Grounds could keep the cost of installation down by using mass production techniques.

The craftsmen installed peep holes last month in all the suites in Leverett House and Mather House, and women's suits in Lowell House. The Masters of those two Houses had the peep holes installed because of the recent rash of armed robberies.
