Trustees of the Longfellow House Wednesday transferred ownership of the building to the Department of the Interior, which will maintain it as a national historical site.
Three of the trustees donated $200,000 for maintenance and improvements to the house, once the home of Henry W. Longfellow, the celebrated New England poet.
The Longfellow Home is historically significant as the dwelling occupied by George Washington during the Revolutionary War siege of Boston.
The house is the second Harvard property to be narred a national historical site this year. The National Register of Historic Places last March gave a similar designation to Old Harvard Yard, the section of the Yard between University Hall and Mass Ave.
