The National Collegiate Athletic Association Monday urged the adoption of a three-point plan aimed at cutting the costs of intercollegiate athletics, particularly football and basketball.
A special committee at the NCAA convention presently underway in Houston, Texas brought strong criticism from large football powers by recommending limits on football and basketball scholarships, basing them on financial need only, and permitting colleges to recruit only senior high school athletes.
Mouthpieces Urged
Another NCAA committee proposed Monday that the use of mouthpieces be made mandatory for college football players.
Both proposals now go before the NCAA Rules Committee which meets next week in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The proposal for financial cutbacks gained weight when Buffalo University announced it was dropping its football program next year in view of operating expenses which contributed to the school's $400,000 deficit.
