Farnsworth Hits New Drug Laws

Dr. Dana Farnsworth, director of the University Health Services, testified before a House subcommittee Friday in opposition to legislation that would give the Justice Department control over research involving marijuana, heroin, and other psychotropic drugs.

Dr. Farnsworth objected to parts of the proposed Comprehensive Drug Control Bill on the basis that the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) is better suited than the Jusice Department to deal with drug abuse.

Rehabilitation

Explaining his position yesterday, Farnsworth said that HEW is more qualified to deal with "education and rehabilitation of drug users" than the Justice Department, which is more concerned with regulation of drug use.

Dr. Farnsworth was one of several members of the Committee for Effective Drug Control to testify. The committee, which also includes Dr. Robert H. Ebert, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, was formed in protest to the bill, which was passed by the Senate last month.
