Kenya Diplomat Hails Union in East Africa

Regional economic and political unity among African states is a necessary first step towards Pan-Africanism, James S. Gichuru, the Finance Minister of Kenya, told the Quincy House African Table last night.

A Pan-African Union is still in the talking stage, he said. He revealed with satisfaction, however, that a federation of the East African states of Kenya, Tanganyika, and Uganda is very close to reality.

Once formed, regional associations throughout Africa could easily band together to form one large nation, whereas the many small states now in existence cannot begin to agree on the problems of continental unification, he concluded.
