Buddhist Monks 'To 'Fast in Saigon

WORLD AND NATIONAL NEWS

SAIGON, South Vietnam, Dec. 15--Buddhist monks and nuns in Saigon will hold a protest fast Wednesday to protest "lies and distortions" by Premier Tran Van Huong's government, a spokesman announced Tuesday.

Thich Ho Giac, ranking spokesman for the Buddhist hierachy, told the monks and nuns the food saved by the 24-hour fast would be contributed to flood victims in central Vietnam.

The main reason for the fast was the failure of Huong to take notice of a fast by three Buddhist leaders called to bring about the downfall of his government, Giac said. The fast ended Monday.

Buddhists also threatened anti-government and anti-British demonstrations. Buddhist propaganda condemned British Ambassador Gordon Etherington-Smith and demanded his recall. Etherington-Smith recently spoke praising Huong.

One source said Buddhist youths might even attempt to sack the British Embassay if the ambassador is not removed.
