Pringle, Abramson Pace Swimmers; Crimson Varsity Sinks Navy, 53-42

John Pringle and Dave Abramson picked up five first places and three pool records between them Saturday, while leading the varsity swimming team to its 13th consecutive victory, a 53 to 42 win over Navy.

Abramson pushed through the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.5 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.0 to defeat soundly the highly rated Middie Gay Hopkins. Since the events are new this year, both times were pool records and might have been better if Abramson had not saved strength for a possible leg in the final freestyle relay. In the 200, Ed Seaton also beat Hopkins to give the Crimson a sweep of the event.

Pringle's pool record came in the 200-yard breast stroke, the next-to-last event of the meet. In spite of the effects of winning the individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke earlier in the contest, he pressed on to a brilliant 2:18.1 clocking, breaking the record of 2:20.0 set last year by Princeton great Gardiner Green. Pringle's win, with a second place by Porky Pitts, insured the Crimson victory before the start of the final relay. A second by Bill Chadsey in the individual medley gave the Crimson that event as well.

The Crimson's other firsts came in the 200-yard butterfly and the dive. In the butterfly event, the Crimson's Joe Stets faded on the last lap, but managed to hold off a strong finish by Navy's Evans to win in 2:15.6.

In the dive, sophomore Danny Mahoney ignored a triple flip by first-rate Navy diver Art Roper, added an amazing 25 points to the total he scored against Army last week, and achieved a 93.25 point performance. A strong 76 point showing by third place Jeff Lewy indicated that the dive may be a Harvard strong point in the tough meets to come.

Navy was not without its own outstanding performances. Junior freestyler Mike Collins won the 50 in 22.3 and set a new Navy record in the 100 with the winning time of 49.0. Just last year this would have tied the Harvard pool mark. Navy's other big point gains came in the medley relay, which the Middies won in 3:56.4, and the freestyle relay which they took in 3:23.1.

The freshman swimming team defeated Hebron Academy by a score of 61 to 34 for their fourth win of the season. The medley relay team of Henry Whelchel, Bruce Fowler, Eric Klaussmann, and John Quinn set a new freshman record, winning in 1:43.7.

The varsity does not see action again until Feb. 2, when they will meet Cornell. That contest and several others in early February will help prepare the Crimson for the tough meet with Princeton on Feb. 16.
