Gift Will Finance Radiology Study

The American Cancer Society yesterday announced a $500,000 grant to the Medical School to establish a professorship of radiology for research in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

The chair, to be known as the Alvan T. and Viola D. Fuller-American Cancer Society Professorship of Radiology, will be created by a gift to the society from the Fuller Foundation. It will be the first time a publicly supported charitable organization has endowed a professorship on any American medical faculty.

Medical Schol officials have not yet nominated anyone for the position. Although a number of faculty members are presently working in radiology, the chair's occupant may be drawn from outside the University.

A new lab, to be financed by funds other than those provided by the Cancer Society, will probably be established to accommodate the research which the new professor will direct.

Although the Fuller chair will involve teaching as well as research, Medical School officials do not yet know whether there will be an addition to the curriculum.
