The freshman soccer team played 73 minutes of scoreless ball yesterday before finally breaking the Exeter defense in double overtime to win, 2-1. It was the Yardlings' first game, and Exeter's first loss in four starts this year.

There was no scoring in regular play with both goalies making save after save. But at one minute in the first overtime left wing Sam Thompson drilled a shot in from outside the penalty circle. That loosened things up for both sides, and almost immediately Exeter's right inside broke free and scored on goalie Jimmy Tyng.

Two minutes later, Bill Perkins took a pass from right wing Bill Hitzig and kicked it in for the Yardlings' winning score, and the last goal of the game. The second overtime period (played because both sides had agreed beforehand to play two periods) was much like the regular game--a defensive battle.

The Crimson victory marked the first time in recent years that Exeter's soccer team has been beaten two years running. Last year, aided by Chris Ohiri, Harvard won 1-0.

Exeter has been highly touted this year. Previous wins included a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth's freshmen.
