A goal by Tadhg Sweeney early in the second half was all the varsity soccer team needed for a slim 2-1 win over Brown Saturday. The tie-breaking shot came after the two teams chased the ball from end to end in the first half without penetrating each other's defense.

Both teams returned after the half-time break with plans for waiting for a break in the opposition's defense. The break for the Crimson came at 1:25 when outside left Chris Martin dribbled in on the far left and fired a shot at Brown goalie Pete Gilson. Sweeney, in the midst of a gang-up near the goal, slipped in the mud but tipped the ball into the goal with a flat, slow-rolling shot. Gilson was caught on the wrong side of the crease.

The victory was the sixth in eight games for coach Bruce Monro's outfit, giving it a 4-2 record in Ivy League play and clinching second place in the League.

Brown, a slight underdog, started off the scoring with a tally by Jim Kfoury at 2:21 of the first period. Kfoury, an inside left, took a pass from Wellford Mason and booted a high shot that hit the crossbar of the goal and dropped in behind the Crimson netminder, John Adams. The score was the only time that the Bruins were able to beat Adams, who did an admirable job in the Crimson goal.

Varsity Defense Contains Bears

However, the varsity's defenses, led by fullback Tim Morgan, deserved credit for holding the Bears' offensive attack down. Brown was often able to work the ball down the field fairly deep into Crimson territory, but was always foiled before coming very close to the goal.
