Fencing Squad Wins Against Trinity, 16-11; Team to Face UConn

The varsity fencers overpowered a weak Trinity squad, 16 to 11, yesterday at Hartford, Conn. Using a predominantly second-string team, the Crimson outclassed its opponents in a meet prolonged by scoring difficulties.

Phil Charat and Dave Johnson each won three straight bouts in foil to pace the varsity's 8-1 rout. Eliot Morrison defeated both his opponents, but his replacement, Alan Gardner, dropped his match for the Crimson's only foil loss.

In the usually weak epee division, the varsity suprisingly came out ahead, 5 to 4. Jim Roberts, who won two out of three bouts, Bruce Parker, Bill Bennett, and Dave Schwartz accounted for the varsity's points. Jon Piel's two triumphs and Bob Whallon's one were all the Crimson was able to salvage in the sabre.

Because of a breakdown in Trinity's electrical scoring device, touches had to be determined by chalk marks, a long and laborious process. In an attempt to expedite proceedings, three touches instead of the usual five were worth a point.
