Bate Urges Extension Of Language Studies

The English Department is considering tightening foreign language requirements for graduate study, according to a recent letter sent to the Board of Tutors by Walter J. Bate, Chairman of the English Department.

In recent years, Bate said, even Honors students have often studied only two years of one language. This deficiency puts them under considerable strain to meet Department requirements of mastering three languages by the end of their second year of graduate study.

Bate urged the tutors to encourage a student to know at least two foreign languages by the end of his senior year "if there's even a fair chance that he has graduate study in mind."
