After two and a half hours of extensive debate, the enlarged Student Council last night elected Edward L. Croman '60, of Leverett House and Newark, N.J. on the first ballot as president for the coming year.

Eugene H. Zagat, Jr. '61, of Winthrop House and New York City, vice-president, Lewis B. Oliver, Jr. '61 of Adams House and Mahopac, New York, treasurer, and Albert L. Jacobs, Jr. '61 of Dunster House and New York City, secretary were also chosen.

"At present, the Student Council acts as a 'mute lobbyist'," Croman asserted in his pre-election speech. He pledged to expand the Council's quarterly publication to a bi-monthly basis in an effort to improve communication with the student body.

Through use of ballots included in the publication, Croman hopes to ascertain opinion on questions of interest to the student body. He also noted that "the Council does many good things which do not get publicized, and we should let students know what we are discussing."

Call for Elections Reform

Croman's speech also called for a reform in the current system of electing Council members and class-wide officers, such as Marshals. "House Committee members should be included on the Council board of elections to insure better cooperation," he said.

Defeated candidates for the presidency, Oliver and Theodore R. Marmor '60 both agreed with Croman that the current electoral system needs reform. Likewise, all three candidates mentioned the possibility of rejoining NSA.

"Last year's meeting of NSA was a shambles," Croman said, "but with a limit of 25 resolutions and regional meetings, NSA meetings may be far more worthwhile."
